We've evaluated 11 multi-family buildings and 2 commercial buildings in Uptown, including a 10-unit, common brick, multi-family building built in the 1950s which required basic repairs on the parapets and roof, but also needed custom window casing for replacement window installed in the 1990s and rebuilding of one entire wall. Another customer was a multi-family with 8-units, with brick facade and and block structural wall built in the late 1990s that required twice as many repairs as the much older 10-unit building. One recommended repair that was not in the budget was fix the balcony connections on the rear elevation.
If you have balconies hanging from brick, look closely at the brick around the connection to the wall. If the bricks are cracking, the balcony may not be safe. Remove heavy objects from the balcony and don't use the balcony until a structural engineer says it is safe to use.

1900 - Uptown became a summer resort town for downtown dwellers, named for the Uptown Store.
1920s – Charlie Chaplin and Gloria Swanson produced films at Essanay Studios on Argyle Street. Since then, Uptown has been a filming location for nearly 500 movies.
1940-50's - The Aragon Ball Room hosted Frank Sinatra, Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Lawrence Welk and Guy Lombardo. Still hosts great artist today, including Bob Dylan.
1980s - The Riviera Theatre was converted from a 1940's Jazz Age moive theater into a concert venue and all the seating was removed on the main floor. Still hosts rock concerts regularly.
