Des Plaines was the site of
Ray Kroc's
first McDonald's, which opened in 1955. The restaurant was demolished in 1984, and a replica was built on the site as a museum which was also demolished due to repeated flooding.
Des Plaines is said to be built over the "Des Plaines Disturbance" an area of up-ended sedimentary rock caused by an meteorite. The crater is said to be 75-200 feet beneath the town. The crater was filled by glacial movement, no evidence of the crater remains on the surface.
