Streeterville is built on a sandbar / landfill that includes the Magnificent Mile and all the land east of it, including Navy Pier. It was named after George Streeter, who in the late 1880s, said his boat hit a sandbar off the Chicago shoreline during a storm. What he thought was a sandbar was actually landfill that was dumped into Lake Michigan to create the land that Lincoln Park and Lake Shore Drive were later built on. Streeter claimed this new land was his and called it the "District of Lake Michigan."
