Oprah Winfrey's Harpo Studios were located on Randolph Street; the site is now McDonald's corporate headquarters.

The neighborhood includes warehouses converted to loft condos, new high rise condos and apartments, high rise and mid rise business offices, retail and restaurants. The Fulton River District is home to the Ogilvie Transportation Center, a Metra commuter rail terminal. The neighborhood is known for the aroma of chocolate from the Blommer Chocolate Company.

Greektown known for restaurant and nightlife on Halsted between Van Buren and Madison. In the late 19th century Greek immigrants settled the area and competed with Italians for business and jobs. Greektown is home to the National Hellenic Museum.

The neighborhood between the Illinois Medical District and UIC's east campus is known as Little Italy, an Italian community developed in the late nineteenth century.
