Albany Park...
In 1893 DeLancy Louderback, from Albany, New York and several other real estate investors purchased land in the area as communities closer to downtown became heavily populated.
Electric streetcars were introduced in Albany Park in 1896. Northwestern Elevated Railroad extended the Ravenswood line to the Kimball terminal in 1907. These transportation improvements led to a real building boom. But after WWII, many residents moved to the suburbs, and many stores and restaurants closed. In the 70's, Korean immigrants settled in Albany Park, which is one of the most diverse communities in Chicago today.
Albany Park includes several neighborhoods, including Albany Park, Mayfair, North Mayfair, Ravenswood Manor and Koreatown. The majority of shops on Lawrence between Kedzie and Pulaski, which is also called "Seoul Drive," are owned by Korean-Americans. There is an annual Korean festival, a Korean radio station and two Korean-language newspapers.
Several famous and some infamous people who live or have lived in Albany Park include: Rod Blagojevich the 40th governor of IL and his wife Patty; Former Chicago Cubs player Randy Jackson; Jerry Krause, former general manager of Chicago Bulls; Abe Saperstein, the founder and former coach and owner of the Harlem Globetrotters; Bob Sirott, radio host at WLS-AM; and last, but not least Sam Zell, billionaire, former founder and chairman of Equity International.
