Did you know ... about Wicker Park?

Wicker Park is located west of the Kennedy, east of Humboldt Park, north of Ukranian Village and south of the 606 Trail and Bucktown. Wicker Park is known for its hip vibe, art galleries and gourmet restaurants. Some of Chicago's most expensive real estate is in Wicker Park. The neighborhood is trendy, known for hosting emerging bands in its numerous clubs and bars, high fashion boutiques, high-end independent grocers. Forbes named Wicker Park  #4 hipster neighborhood in the country in 2012.

Wicker Park was established by Alderman Charles Wicker, and his brother, who purchased 80 acres along Milwaukee Avenue in 1870 and laid out a subdivision with a big park which became home for Chicagoans displaced after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. The area was popular with merchants, who built large mansions on Hoyne and Pierce. Hoyne, known as "Beer Baron Row", was the road that Chicago's wealthy brewers built their private mansions.

In the late 1980/early 1990s efforts by community development groups to build new affordable-housing brought artists to the neighborhood, attracted by easy access to the Loop, cheap loft space in the abandoned factories, and urban vibe.

In '89, the "Around the Coyote" art festival was launched to help working artists and small galleries gain exposure. For decades, the festival was based in Flatiron Arts Building andheld during the month of October, Chicago's Artist Month. In 2008 the festival moved downtown, marking an end of an era, when it was also renamed "Looptopia." The presence of artists residing in Wicker Park has declined in recent years, with many artists migrating to other arts centers in the city.

Notable past and current musicians who have or now live or work in Wicker Park include:

Liz Phair, singer-songwriter, wrote Exile in Guyville in Wicker Park.

James Iha, guitarist for Smashing Pumpkins lived in Wicker Park.

The band members of Wilco, Veruca Salt and Urge Overkill also lived and worked in Wicker Park.

Wicker Park is the setting of the 2004 film "Wicker Park," but it was actually filmed in Montreal, Quebec.

The movie "High Fidelity," starring Evanston-born John Cusack was filmed in Wicker Park.

Part of the Spike Lee movie "Chiraq" was filmed at the Double Door on Milwaukee.

The Chicago-based TV show "Shameless" filmed in and around Wicker Park for multiple years.

The NBC Chicago franchise including Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D., and Chicago Med film in Wicker Park on a regular basis.

A season of "The Real World: Chicago" was filmed in Wicker Park, but the show stopped filming because of neighborhood residents' protests. Residents felt the exposure was leading to quicker gentrification of Wicker Park. The protests lead to 11 arrests.

Wicker Park neighborhood, Chicago, IL Split Face Block Repair

Many masonry buildings built in Wicker Park since 1990 are wet. These wet buildings need specialized services to mitigate water and moisture intrusion and to dry out. Buildings built with split face block and other modern masonry products like "jumbo brick"  and "Renaissance Stone" need custom flashing and parapet ventilation to release moisture trapped in the building's walls and roof system. We recommend installing WickRight passive ventilation on buildings built with split face block, concrete block, jumbo block and Renaissance Stone or precast concrete. Buildings built with split face block, concrete block, jumbo block also need to be sealed with masonry sealant. Renaissance stone and pre-cast concrete are difficult to seal, so we suggest covering these details with sheet metal or designing custom flashings to divert water and rain away from these materials. WickRight General Contracting offers excellent split face block and pre-cast concrete repair services in Wicker Park at reasonable prices. Call 312-720-1467 today for an estimate.
